The author uses many comparisons throughout the story to make her message clear for readers. (We later learn that Albert
finds it helpful to think in comparisons or analogies.) Alert students to the use of figurative language.
On page 2, Ally says, “teachers are like the machines that take quarters for bouncy balls. You know what you’re going to get. Yet,
you don’t know, too.”
What comparisons do you see throughout the story? Write those comparisons and their page in the book, and then what you think the comparisons mean.
pg. 34 "I look down at my Mercury dime and its date, wishing people could last as long as coins." She misses her grandpa and wishes he was still alive because coins last forever unless/until they're destroyed. (by V and TJ)
